How does smoking affect your body? (Gonzalo San Roman)
One of the consequences in the short run is that there are more respiratory infections, expectorations, deterioration of the lung function (asthma and allergic symptoms), nicotine dependence, and sensation of low physical fitness and deterioration of growth.
Physical consequences on the long run among the most important consequences of tobacco consumption is chronic lung disease, cardiovascular diseases, and development of cancer. On the other hand adolescents that begins smoking have the risk of developing dependence and become regular consumers continuing like that when they become adults.
Adolescents are more prone to become tobacco dependent than adults. This is because the development of the brain in adolescents is more susceptible, they have more time of exposure to tobacco and more amount of consumption so they become more dependent.
Alcohol consumption triples in those adolescents who are engaged in cigarettes smoking. Cigarettes consumption in adolescents is a pathway that leads to the consumption of other substances such as marihuana, alcohol, and other drugs.
Studies have shown that those adolescents who consume tobacco may present more social and academic problems.
What can be an effective campaign to educate teenagers to not smoke? (Gonzalo San Roman)
Parents need to tell their teenagers that smoking is not aloud. Parents disapproval has a lot of impact in teenagers. Teen whose parents have set rules tend to smoke less than teens whose parents don't set smoking limits. The same goes to teens who feel close to their parents. Parents are role models, so parents are the first and most important parts of the campaign. Schools should have programs for teenagers so that they can handle peer pressure. Be informed about the consequences of cigarette smoking. Have more sports events and programs so that teenagers involved and feel the need to be in good shape physically in order to practice them. An effective campaign could be to call CEDRO to come to school each year and talk to the 5th graders or 6th graders about smoking and its consequences.
